Guest2017 SS manual grinds going into third and I think the previous owner was a bit too enthusiastic with the no lift shift
I’ve been enjoying my 2017 Camaro SS for about eight months now and the manual gearbox was honestly the main reason I bought this car over a Mustang because the Tremec TR6060 just feels so much more solid and mechanical compared to that notchy MT82 but lately I’ve noticed that when I’m shifting quickly from second to third even at normal road speeds it grinds for a split second before slotting in and if I try to shift at higher revs it’s like hitting a wall and I have to double clutch like I’m driving a vintage truck just to get it into gear without sounding like a complete amateur. I’m guessing the synchros are on their way out which is a bit of a known weak point on these boxes especially if the previous owner was fond of banging gears without much mechanical sympathy and I’m trying to figure out if it’s better to just have the gearbox pulled and the synchros replaced before it gets worse or if there’s a chance a fluid change to something like Royal Purple or Redline might quiet it down and buy me another year. I’ve been looking around for a place that does Camaro Manual Gearbox Repair Sharjah because I don’t want to drag this thing all the way to a Chevy dealer in Dubai and pay dealership labor rates for a job that any decent transmission shop with Tremec experience should be able to handle. Anyone on here actually had a TR6060 rebuilt or synchros replaced in Sharjah and can vouch for a shop that didn’t just throw it back together and hope for the best or should I just learn to live with the grind and pretend it’s a race car thing.

GuestThird gear synchro on the TR6060 is genuinely one of the known weak points on these boxes especially when the previous owner was enthusiastic with no lift shifts so you are probably diagnosing this correctly. Try the fluid change first because it genuinely does help on these transmissions and costs almost nothing compared to a rebuild, Redline MT90 specifically has a good reputation for smoothing out TR6060 synchro grind in the early stages. If the fluid change makes a noticeable difference you have bought yourself time, if it does nothing then the synchros are too far gone and the rebuild conversation becomes necessary.

GuestHad almost the same grind developing on my SS and the Redline fluid swap actually bought me about eight months before the grind came back worse and I finally had to bite the bullet on a proper synchro replacement. Honestly not a bad outcome for the cost of a fluid change and it gave me time to find the right shop without any urgency pressure. The double clutching you mentioned to get into gear cleanly is a sign the synchro is genuinely struggling rather than just being finicky so I wouldn’t wait too long after trying the fluid before making a decision on the rebuild. These things tend to get worse faster once they pass a certain point of wear.

GuestThe TR6060 is actually a very rebuildable unit and a competent transmission specialist with manual gearbox experience does not need to be a Chevy dealer to do this job properly, the Tremec design is well documented and the synchro replacement is straightforward for someone who knows what they are doing with performance manual gearboxes. What you want to avoid is a shop that pulls the box, replaces only the third gear synchro rings, and puts it back together without inspecting the other synchros and shift forks for wear while everything is already apart. If the previous owner was genuinely hard on this gearbox the damage rarely stops at just the one gear that is currently presenting symptoms. Ask any shop you consider specifically what their inspection process covers while the box is open and how they handle finding additional wear beyond the presenting fault.

GuestDragging it to a Dubai dealer for this job is genuinely hard to justify when the TR6060 is a well known unit that any experienced manual transmission specialist can work on without needing brand specific tooling or software. The labour rate difference between a good independent in Sharjah and a dealer in Dubai on a job like this is significant and the outcome from a proper specialist who does this regularly is often better than a dealer technician who works on these transmissions occasionally as part of a broader workshop remit. Finding someone who specifically mentions Tremec experience rather than just general manual gearbox work is the filter worth applying because the TR6060 has specific characteristics that familiarity with the unit helps with. Ask them about common failure patterns on this specific box before committing and their answer will tell you quickly whether they actually know it or are just confident they can figure it out.

GuestPretending it is a race car thing only works until the grind becomes a crunch and at that point the damage inside the box accelerates quickly and starts affecting components beyond just the synchros. The hitting a wall feeling you described when shifting at higher revs is telling you the synchro is already struggling to match shaft speeds before engagement which means it is working harder than it should on every single shift even the ones that go in cleanly. Getting this sorted before it gets to that stage protects the rest of the gearbox which is in good shape and keeps the repair cost at synchro replacement territory rather than something more comprehensive. The TR6060 with fresh synchros and a good fluid in it is genuinely one of the nicest manual gearboxes in a modern muscle car and getting it back to that condition is absolutely worth doing on a car you bought specifically for the driving experience.
